개요

만약 2010년대의 가장 중요한 아시아 영화작가를 손꼽는다면, 그 리스트 안에 왕빙이라는 이름을 결코 빼놓을 수 없다. <석탄 가격>은 <철서구>(2003)나 <광기가 우리를 갈라놓을 때까지>(2013) 처럼 장시간 동안 관찰의 미학을 선보인 왕빙의 다큐멘터리에 비하면 찰나로 느껴질 정도로 짧지만 그가 어떤 영화적 시선이나 스타일을 갖고 작업하는지 충분히 체감할 수 있다. 굳이 말하자면, 왕빙의 영화세계 입문서로 부족함이 없다. 왕빙은 이미 840분짜리 <원유>(2008)에서 중국의 자본화와 권력에 대한 알레고리로 유전과 광산에서의 혹독한 작업을 선보였고, <석탄 가격>은 <원유>의 번외편 같은 작업이다. 황무지처럼 흙먼지가 날리는 광산지대는 SF영화의 한 장면을 떠올리게 만든다. 줄줄이 이동하는 트럭과 트럭에 석탄을 담는 굴삭기를 보면 일견 석탄과 자본주의의 관계를 탐구하는 실험처럼 보인다. 이곳에서 ‘검은 화폐’ 석탄은 세상을 지배하는 논리이자 힘이다. 영화는 서부의 광산지대에서 채굴된 석탄이 트럭에 실려 타지역으로 이동해가는 과정을 면밀하게 포착했다. 이 석탄을 싣고 나르는 트럭 운전사들은 도로 위에서 삶을 살아간다. 밤새 도로를 달리고 쪽잠을 자기 일쑤다. 그 후 석탄을 좀 더 비싼 가격에 넘기기 위해 중간 상인과의 흥정에 들어간다. 돈과 욕설이 직접 오가는 이 거래과정은 전쟁을 방불케 한다. 왕빙의 카메라는 이 현장을 있는 그대로 생생하게 보여준다. 이야말로, 냉혹한 삶의 현 장이자 자본의 이면이다. 로베르 브레송이 그의 마지막 영화 <돈>(1983)에서 지폐가 건네지는 손을 클로즈업하듯 왕빙은 석탄의 이동을 포착했다. Summary

If one lists up the most important Asian scenario writers of the 2010s, the name Wang Bing should never be left out. Coal Money is just short compared to his TieXiQu: West of the Tracks (2003) or Till Madness Do Us Part (2013), both documentaries of which display Wang Bing’s aesthetics interest in hours’ long watching, but it still allows the viewer feel his cinematic eyes and style. Maybe the film can even serve as an introduction into Wang Bing’s cinematic world. Wang Bing depicts the harsh labor condition at oil fields and mines as an 840-minute allegory on China’s capitalization and power in Crude Oil (2008), and Coal Money is like a sequel to Crude Oil. The mining site, full of dust clouds reminds us of science-fiction scenery. Trucks move in rows and the excavators load coal on them in a fashion that seems like an experiment on coal-capitalism relationships. Here, the black money is coal and it dominates the world. The movie observes closely the procedure from the western district where coal is mined to be transferred to other districts. The truck drivers live their lives on the road, driving all night and taking short dozes now and then. Then a bargain with a broker begins, and a war-like process takes place as foul languages and money are exchanged. Wang Bing’s camera captures all these cruel life scenes and the hidden side of capital, realistically. As Robert Bresson closed up the money-giving hand in his L’Argent(1983), Wang Bing thus captures the coal’s travelling. (Jong-hyuk JUN)

1967년 중국 산시성 출생. 뤼쉰 미술학교에서 사진을 전공한 후 베이징 영화학교를 졸업했다. 1999년부터 4년 동안 심천 산업지구 ‘티에시’의 쇠락한 풍경을 담은 9시간 45분짜리 대작 다큐멘터리 <철서구>를 만들어 국제적 주목을 받았다. 이 같은 중국에 관한 민족지이자 관찰지랄 수 있는 작업들은 <중국 여인의 연대기>, <광기가 우리를 갈라놓을 때까지>, <아버지와 아들> 등으로 이어지고 있다.

Born in Shaanxi, China in 1967, Bing majored in photography at Lu Xun Arts Academy and then graduated from Beijing Film Academy. He received international acclaim for his 9 hour 11 minute epic documentary Tie Xi Qu, which was filmed in Shenyang’s industrial Tiexi district for over two years from 1999. His use of ethnography and observation of China continues with his works Fengming, a Chinese Memoir,’Til Madness Do Us Part, and Father and Sons.
